Extended Aftercare Instructions:

As a Mohel Doctor, I want to educate you on what to expect and how to take care of your baby post circumcision.  Please consider this information carefully, as it will answer the most frequently asked questions and will help prevent any health complications from arising.  My goal is to always ensure that your baby's health is #1 priority.

Using my Mohel MD experience, I treat circumcision as a surgery.  Just like with any surgery, the key to ensuring proper healing is keeping the affected area as clean as possible.  My rule is that no guest should touch the baby for 24 hours following the circumcision.  This keeps the baby fully safe and free from bacteria while the penis is healing.

For the next 7 days, you can give the baby a sponge bath.  Do not completely submerge the baby in water.  I would avoid submerging the penis in water until it is healed and until the umbilical cord or belly button area has healed.  Keep the penis and diaper area as clean as possible to prevent infection and to expedite the healing process.

If the baby has a large bowel movement, the baby can be cleaned in a sponge bath in warm water mixed with a couple drops of hypoallergenic soap.  Wipe and dry the baby’s bottom very gently without touching the penis area.  At every diaper change, apply a gauze pad with Vaseline and place it like a tent on the penis.

Typically, the penis should heal in about a week.  For some babies, the healing can be as fast as 3-4 days.  After the circumcision, the penis glans will look red and glossy, and the affected area will swell up and then shrink to normal size.  All this is normal.  If the penis looks blue or purple, contact Dr. Rumbak immediately.

A white, beige, or yellow crusting will form at the circumcision area.  Do not tamper with it or attempt to pick at it. This is a normal scabbing that will heal on its own and is not a symptom of infection.  These patches are a type of scab similar to the scab that forms around the umbilical cord, after the umbilical cord has fallen off.

It is very normal for a baby to be irritable after a circumcision.  As such, do your best to keep him extra comfortable.  When feeding the baby, keep him in a flat position and burp the baby on your shoulder.  When a baby is healing, it is important to minimize stimulation and stress to help the body promote healing.

Dr. Rumbak is open to questions and should always be consulted when concerns arise.  You should also speak with your baby's pediatrician.  As a Mohel Pediatrician, Dr. Rumbak brings the unique medical expertise and knowledge to answer questions regarding aftercare.  Your baby's health is safe and secure with Dr. Rumbak as your mohel.
